WBL Medical Group, a leader in medical device industry innovation, appeared on CCTV’s Sci-Tech China, an acknowledgment of their technological achievements and a testament to the years of research efforts by several experts and professors. Professor Li Zheng, Executive Director of Bengbu Hospital of Shanghai First People's Hospital and Director of the Urology and Andrology Department at Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated First People's Hospital, emotionally shared the extraordinary journey of LIPUS (Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound), developed and produced by Beijing WBL Company, from concept to reality.
Professor Li Zheng, MD
Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, Chief Scientist of National Key R&D Program
Executive Director of Bengbu Hospital, Shanghai First People's Hospital
Director of the Urology and Andrology Department, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated First People's Hospital
Academic Leader of Urology and Andrology at Shanghai First People's Hospital
Chairman of the Male Urology Committee, China Human Health Science and Technology Promotion Association, Chairman of the China Fertility Assessment and Intervention Project, Chief Editor of Urology Science Editorial Board, Continuing Medical Education Journal. He has studied in the United States, Canada, and Hong Kong.
Specialized in clinical and basic research on male infertility and sexual dysfunction, Professor Li Zheng has developed a microsurgical treatment system for male infertility, created new methods for penile prosthesis implantation, innovated the "double pull" surgery technique for varicocele, established new techniques for penile reconstruction, and pioneered single sperm freezing and thawing IVF technology. His male andrology team won the Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Progress Award and the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award. Professor Li’s efforts have helped infertile families with sexual dysfunction conceive healthy offspring.
From Dream to Reality: Collaborative Efforts of Experts and Scholars
"From invasive to non-invasive, from non-invasive to reality," Professor Li Zheng described LIPUS technology. This breakthrough not only marks a new path for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) but also offers hope to countless patients. From the early concepts proposed by Academician Guo Yinglu and Professor Lv Futai from the University of California, San Francisco, to the verification by Professors Lin Guiteng and Xin Zhongcheng, and now the widespread clinical application, every step in the development of LIPUS has been fueled by the wisdom and hard work of experts.
From Laboratory to Clinic: Exploration of LIPUS Applications
On April 11, 2019, under the guidance of Professors Lv Futai and Lin Guiteng, and led by Professor Xia Shujie and Professor Li Zheng from Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated First People's Hospital, a multi-center study on the effectiveness and safety of different frequencies of LIPUS in treating mild to moderate ED was conducted across several major hospitals. This study, which lasted for one year and seven months and treated 320 patients, proved that LIPUS is highly safe and effective, setting a new standard for ED treatment.
Innovation and Humanistic Care: Practical Applications of New Treatment Methods
The success of LIPUS lies not only in the technology itself but also in the innovation and optimization of the patient treatment experience. Professor Li Zheng emphasized, "The privacy and humanistic care during the treatment process are our primary concerns." Based on this, the team upgraded patient care by integrating smart rooms, psychological counseling, and VR panoramic technology, making the treatment process more considerate and convenient.
Additionally, regarding ED caused by diabetes, Professor Li's team collaborated with a team in Hong Kong to conduct "LIPUS for Promoting Repair of Erectile Tissue Endothelial Damage in Diabetic Patients: Experimental and Clinical Research." This study innovatively applied single-cell genomics to map the gene expression profiles of diabetic ED patients, further optimizing diagnostic and therapeutic pathways, providing new treatment options for diabetic ED patients.
Rethinking and Taking Action: Future Possibilities
In the interview, Professor Li Zheng expressed: "The 'rhythm of life' created from the beginning of the story reflects our original intention and commitment to the end. Transforming an idea into a product and then into innovative research is not just about technology, but about our care for patients." The successful application of LIPUS technology brings hope to more male patients and opens up possibilities for the future.
With the global promotion and application of LIPUS, we can believe that the future of andrology treatment will be brighter. "Let the 'difficult' unspoken words of men vanish with the waves." The innovative journey of LIPUS is a vivid example of the fusion of technology and humanity.
