04TECHNOLOGY
An Introduction to LIPUS · WBL's Technology Foundation
WBL LIPUS (Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound) is a non-invasive acoustic therapy that delivers pulsed ultrasound at defined parameters to target tissue. The treatment requires no surgery and no systemic medication, offering a new physical-therapy option for ED.

▲ Figure 4 · Mechanism of LIPUS: vascular repair and nerve regeneration
In January 2024, the Chinese Expert Consensus on LIPUS Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction was officially published (Chinese Journal of Andrology, Vol. 38, No. 1), and LIPUS therapy was incorporated into the consensus. From joint theoretical innovation and animal research with UC San Francisco since 2012, to multi-center clinical validation in China, and further to consensus inclusion and CE certification, the translational pathway of LIPUS is clearly documented.
PATHWAY / From Mild-Moderate to Severe ED
ED is graded by the IIEF-5 score into mild (17–21), mild-to-moderate (12–16), moderate (8–11) and severe (5–7). It is a progressively developing disease, often regarded as a “

▲ Figure 5 · ED grading and the LIPUS evidence gradient
The 2024 consensus outlines a stratified approach: mild-to-moderate ED may be treated with LIPUS alone; patients with an inadequate response to oral medication may combine LIPUS with their therapy(8 sessions per course), subject to evaluation by the treating physician. From the 2016 multi-center study in mild-moderate ED to the 2026 prospective study in severe ED, the evidence base of LIPUS has been building step by step along this pathway.
SEVERE / Severe ED: A New Treatment Option
Severe ED has long been a therapeutic challenge in andrology. In 2026, the prospective study by the urology-andrology team of Shanghai General Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, entitled "Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound for severe erectile dysfunction: A prospective study with 3-year follow-up", was accepted by the international urology journal Current Urology. The study used precisely the WBL-ED Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound Therapy Device — patients with severe ED can also be treated with LIPUS. Conducted from September 2020 to December 2021, the study enrolled 52 patients with severe ED, of whom 43 completed the standard course (2 sessions per week for 4 weeks, 8 in total) and the week-8 evaluation.

At week 8, the IIEF-EF score of the 43 subjects rose from a baseline of 6.98 to 14.53 (a mean gain of 7.56 points, p<0.001); 22 subjects (51.2%) reached the ≥7-point minimal clinically important difference (MCID) threshold; the median erection hardness score (EHS) improved from grade 1 to grade 3, and the proportion with morning erections rose from 54.8% to 81.0%; post-treatment pain VAS scores were all 0, with no adverse events recorded. In a telephone follow-up about 3 years later, 65% of the 20 reachable subjects reported erections maintained to completion of intercourse, and 70% perceived their erectile function as improved over baseline.
The authors also note rigorously that this was a single-arm, exploratory observational study with attrition during long-term follow-up, and the results need further validation in larger-sample, randomized controlled studies. Together with the 2019 multi-center randomized double-blind study in mild-moderate ED and the 2022 randomized clinical study comparing 3 vs. 2 sessions per week, the evidence base of LIPUS is extending from mild-moderate to severe ED, and from short-term observation to long-term follow-up. Whether LIPUS therapy is appropriate should still be determined by a professional andrologist through comprehensive evaluation and an individualized plan.

WBL maintains long-term collaboration with leading experts at home and abroad: the LIPUS technology was advocated by Academician Guo Yinglu, and the company has carried out long-term industry-academia-research cooperation with the team of Professor Tom Lue at UC San Francisco (UCSF) and Professor Xin Zhongcheng; through its "Ninth Muscle" science-popularization platform, WBL promotes physician and patient education, industrial collaboration and international exchange. The product won the 2025 IDEA Design Award, and the devices have entered many tertiary and prefecture-level hospitals in China as well as King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Thailand.
MEDIA / CCTV Report
As a representative of innovative medical technology, WBL LIPUS was featured on the CCTV Sci-Tech China program, showcasing the translation of micro-energy medicine from laboratory research to clinical practice.
